Building Optimism: Mid-Century Modern Architecture

“Building Optimism: Mid-Century Modern Architecture and the Future-Thinking of Post-War Australia”

A guided architectural experience led by Vanessa Couzens

Event Overview

This special Heritage Festival event explores how mid-century modern architecture expressed Australia’s post-war optimism, innovation, and belief in social progress. Led by architectural expert Vanessa Couzens, the event examines how new materials, planning ideals, and modernist design reshaped Australian cities, suburbs, and civic spaces during the 1940s–70s.

Through illustrated talks, guided site analysis, photography interpretation, and walking-based exploration, participants will discover how architecture from this era reflected bold experimentation, democratic ideals, and confidence in the future.
