Manning Clark Lecture - Chris Masters
Chris Masters is the longest serving reporter on Australia’s longest running current affairs television program, Four Corners. His record remains intact despite leaving the program in 2009.
In 25 years he made over 100 programs. His first ‘The Big League’ triggered the Street Royal Commission, which investigated judicial corruption in NSW. His 1987 report ‘The Moonlight State’ helped initiate the Fitzgerald inquiry into police and political corruption in Queensland.
His work has earned numerous industry awards including Australia’s most prestigious, the Gold Walkley for his international exclusive on the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior by the French secret service. He received further Walkleys for ‘Search Without Rescue’ about a failed air sea rescue in Bass Strait and ‘The Coward’s War’, a profile of the Bosnian conflict. ‘Inside a Holocaust’, his report on genocide in Rwanda received a Logie award.
Chris is also an author of three books, Inside Story 1991, Not for Publication, 2001, and Jonestown 2006. The latter received three awards, one of them a further Walkley.
He has been awarded a Public Service Medal for his anti corruption work, as well as a Centenary Medal. In 2006 RMIT University conferred an honorary Doctorate in Communication. Chris is now a Doctor of Letters and Adjunct Professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Queensland.
Chris continues to work as a freelance reporter, most particularly as a contributing editor at Sydney’s Daily Telegraph.
